music (just loud enough to hear) no need to blast your friends when they enter the door. (you can make it louder later if you like)
food (something to munch and crunch, cheese and meat tray, veggie tray, cracker tray, coookie tray)
drinks (age appropriate, and designated driver friendly)
Games (quick play games like uno or scattergories)
Make sure your guests are mingling, it's your job to introduce everyone (if they don't already know everyone) and even start conversations!

I find that the best parties are ones where the host or hostess pays a lot of attention to the guest list. Whatever the food and drinks are, it's the guests that make the party.

Know who is coming and take into consideration the personalities of your crowd. This way you can taylor your event so that the food, music and drinks are all designed to suit your guests. Make sure you have plenty of everything, running out of booze could be catastrophic. Also, be sure to introduce people if your guests don't know each other very well.

make sure that you have appetizers (thats it) a really good dj, some nice strob lights and tell whoever is coming to look really good so that the atmophere is "dress to impress". invite a few people that you know LOVE to party (just a few) that way to hype the crowd up. the last thing you need is everyone just standing around looking like they are waiting for the bus!
