Specifically P. carinii pneumonia is the common killer of AIDS patients. It is not normally very dangerous as a healthy immune system can easily handle it.

AIDS is caused by a virus which attacks the imune or self-defence system of the body . Thus anyone with AIDS is open to infection from even normally non-pathogenic organisms . Pneumonia due often to a fungal infection is often terminal ,but infections from oral cavity ,all the way to the gut ,can speed death thru poor nutrition . And lastly ,cancer can have a free run at the AIDS patient because there is no self protective system to kill developing cancer cells.

I agree with Alanbp. AIDS break down your immune system, so that something as easliy as the common cold can make you very ill and possibly kill you. Also, it makes it harder for you to heal, for example if you cut your self very deep, your body can still heal it self but it will take longer and the longer it takes the more likely your body can get an infection.

The Aids itself does not kill you it suppress your immune system which makes other things kill you like the flu, pneumonia, cancer, etc....
