HPV or Human Papilloma Virus can remain dormant for years and years. Sometimes pregnancy will flare it up. Sometimes stress will flare it up. It is pretty unpredictable. Some women and men do not even know they have it, because it can be asymptomatic. It can also last and be troublesome in the active phase. It is different for everyone. Also, there are several different strains of this virus. I wouldn't start accusing your spouse of infidelity. I don't know how old you all are, but this could have been transmitted back in high school or something. And, she may have never ever known she had it.
On the bright side, I attended a brief conference at work on HPV and the new vaccination that has been approved--Gardisil. If you have female children, the FDA is recommending vaccination starting at 9 years old through age 26, with the ideal age being 10-11 years old. This is targeted before the child becomes sexually active and risks exposure to the virus. Just a little added info if you do have children.
Your wife could also get the vaccination even though she has already tested positive--it won't "cure" it, but it will keep the flare ups at bay and help prevent cervical cancer.

Yes, it can lie dormant for many years. I run a support group for HPV and cancers and I have seen it all the way up to 30 years! It can lie dormant, or inactive and not cause any problems. If the immune system is weakened at all it can come out and cause havoc. So many people believe their spouses have cheated when this pops us, but that is not neccessarily the case.

YOU CAN HAVE HPV FOR YEARS WITH OUT IT EVER SHOWING UP, she could have got it way before you were even married, i'm pretty sure you might have it now, but hpv doesn't tend to effect men it mostly cause cancer in the cervix or it can cause genital warts there are many types of hpv it all depends on what type she has... Just because she was diagnoised with it now doesn't mean you cheated or gave it to her, so if your concerned go to your docter and get std testing and talk to your doctor about hpv and if it can effect you.. Good luck to you

actually HPV isnt one virus but a group of more than 100 known viruses and depending on which ones you get you can get warts, cancer(s), none of the above or all of the above but I think statistically most people that have it dont know that they do. and it can lay dormant for as many years as the body can fight it.
