When I cough, I have been getting pain on the left side of my back. What could be causing the pain? Am taking antiobiotic and cough meds to no avail.

If the cough is viral, antibiotics will not help alleviate your symptoms. If it is bacterial, then you might not be taking the right medication. Your back probably hurts because of the coughing.

You might have allergies and post nasal drip. Post nasal drip is mucous that drips down and irritates the back of your throat in much the same way as the drip drip drip of a leaky faucet is irritating to the mind. When your throat gets irritated it causes you to cough. Go to an ENT they can tell yo uifyou have post nasal drip and if you do you can then get tested for allergies. I fyou don't have insurance try taking antihistamines, I'll bet they'll help. As for the pain in your back that could be due to your stomach muscles working overtime when you cough, if it's mid back. If it's upper or lower back, it would be something else.

My father used to cough so hard at times, he actually fractured his ribs.

It is muscle strain. Try some of the remedies they suggest - if you can get rid of the cough the pain should stop.

You've been to the doctor (obviously); did you tell him about it? Make a call.

I found this in an old health book and tried it, I have asthma and it works, here it is, a tall glass of welches purple grape juice will thin the mucus and let you breath for 8 hours and it boots you body to fight it, try it and watch your cough disappear, I even asked my Doc how this work, the answer was it thins out the mucus and your lung are free of it, best wishes, PS use welches they squeeze the seeds and it is better then the cheap ones that don't squeeze the seeds

the pain could be a number of things. The antibiotic obviously didn't work. Go back to your doctor.

Cough is a symptom NOT the problem. So ignore the well-intentioned home remedies.

You may have an infection in your lungs. Best bet is to visit Doctor ASAP. In the meantime, suck on peppermints. They work well with relieving tickles and other irritants in the throat.
