No, soy isn't very good for adults and is terrible for children. It contains chemicals for instance that can alter infants hormonal balances, amoung various other things.
I quote: "New research suggests high concentrations of manganese found in soybean-based baby formula can lead to brain damage in infants and altered behaviors in adolescents.
Dr. Francis Crinella, clinical professor of pediatrics at UC-Irvine, and Trinh Tran, a graduate researcher at the UC-Davis Department of Animal Studies, have described how the soybean plant lifts up manganese in the soil and concentrates it so that its use in soy-based infant formula can result in as many as 200 times the level found in natural breast milk."
http://www.mercola.com/2001/jun/13/soy_formula.htm
"Many parents that fed soy formulas in the 1960's did so after receiving the advice that they were 'better than breast milk'. Had they known that these products contained phytoestrogens, compounds that are now known to cause thyroid disorders, behavioural and developmental disorders and cancer they would not have even contemplated the use of what was, in hindsight, an experimental product."
http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/04babyhealth.htm
"Babies fed soy-based formula have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed milk-based formula.
Infants exclusively fed soy formula receive the estrogenic equivalent of at least five birth control pills per day.
Male infants undergo a “testosterone surge” during the first few months of life, when testosterone levels may be as high as those of an adult male. During this period, baby boys are programmed to express male characteristics after puberty, not only in the development of their sexual organs and other masculine physical traits, but also in setting patterns in the brain characteristic of male behavior.
Pediatricians are noticing greater numbers of boys whose physical maturation is delayed, or does not occur at all, including lack of development of the sexual organs. Learning disabilities, especially in male children, have reached epidemic proportions.
Soy infant feeding—which floods the bloodstream with female hormones that inhibit testosterone—cannot be ignored as a possible cause for these tragic developments. In animals, soy feeding indicates that phytoestrogens in soy are powerful endocrine disrupters.
Almost 15 percent of white girls and 50 percent of African-American girls show signs of puberty such as breast development and pubic hair, before the age of eight. Some girls are showing sexual development before the age of three. Premature development of girls has been linked to the use of soy formula and exposure to environmental estrogens such as PCBs and DDE."

Is there an alternative the doctor can suggest for you? I do feel it is dangerous. A bottle of soy milk is like giving your baby 5 birth control pills. My daughter is in 5th grade and already half the girls at her school (at age 10) are starting their periods. I suspect it has a lot to do with soy in our American diets. Soy is superduper cheap, and they are really pushing it onto us.
I feel I have an "objective" opinion, because I was a soy eater, lover for many years. It made me sick and shut my metabolism/thyroid down and I gained a lot of weight (basically messed with my thyroid hormone). I did not know that soy was a culprit until years later. Later in life, I also developed a goiter in the neck (later, I was revealed that soy is a goitrogen). So now I avoid soy.
I also experimented with it later on...and tried a diet that was all vegetarian,, mostly soy and veggies. I lost some weight, but when I got my thyroid checked, It was the WORST I had ever had in history and they wouldn't take my tonsils out (almost) b/c of it!
So from my experience:
1. soy messes with hormones. soy messes with thyroid hormones (blocks them). Thyroid hormones regulate your whole body.
2. Soy has Isoflavens in it (especially the milk) which is like estrogen (similiar)...does your son need extra estrogen?
Just b/c they make baby food or formula out of soy doesn't mean it's good for a baby!
Of course there are a lot of supporters of soy, so the decision is yours to make. I do feel that the soy industry is huge and will tell you it's good just like they used to tell us lowfat is good (when we need good oils in our bodies we now find out). Good luck on your research.

Soy milk is fine, as long as your son is not allergic to soy!
So far, it would appear that his drinking soy milk during the day, and breastmilk at night is working fine. Don't over think the small stuff.
Cow's milk is for baby cows...not humans. The protein levels are way off for human babies. The dairy industry would NOT want you to know that, however. Imagine the financial losses!
More and more human babies are reacting in a negative way to cow's milk. What does THAT say?

I know it's impossible, but don't worry. It sounds like you are a very good mom! Breastfeeding for a whole year, wow! My daughter also has a cow's milk sensitivity and has been drinking the Kids Fortified Silk since she turned one (before that we used soy formula). It's very good for her. It has more calcium and vitamins than real milk!

We often see hypothyroid symptoms totally reversed when commits to a plan that supports balance through nutrition and daily self-care. Learn here https://tr.im/WlGVF
Consume foods naturally high in B vitamins, such as whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and iodine (fish, seaweed, vegetables and root vegetables).
Exercise daily, at least 30–60 minutes per day, 4–5 times a week.
Practice deep breathing and other techniques that trigger the “relaxation response” – such as meditation and guided visualization.

No, It's not bad for you. When you read something that says soy is bad, look for who funded the research, 9 times out of 10 it will become fairly obvious why the results say what they do.

anyone who thinks soy milk or any soy products are bad for you is crazy. cow milk is bad for you. it contains alot of fat and all of the chemicals/steroids/ and growth hormones that those cows are injected with to increase milk output and growth.
soy milk is low in fat and 99% of the time organic. it contains no harmful chemicls or antibiotics which weaken your child's immune system.
