A number of things, all not good but if controlled or getting them in control can at least improve your life span. Uncontrolled sugars can cause the body to break down. It can cause circulatory problems that lead to numbness, necrosis ( death) of areas of the body from lack of blood circulation. Heart problems since it's responsible for pumping the blood. Vision loss or blindness, due to hemmorrhaging of the tiny micro- vessels is the back of the eye. The list can keep going.
Do some research ask our doctor and most importantly be hones when asked what your blood sugars are. It could actually help to save your life.
Good luck!

Too much sugar in the blood causes a lot of long term problems. Water follows sugar, so the blood vessels get toughened from water and sugar going back and forth through the vessel walls, trying to reach a steady state. This can cause hypertension and heart disease. It can cause kidney damage for the same reason, because kidney filter the blood, and they get a heck of a workout if there's too much sugar. Nerve damage to limbs and eyes , called neuropathy and retinopathy, respectively, are other problems. Neuropathy is painful and permanent, so something to avoid. Retinopathy causes blindness, another thing to avoid. The good news is that keeping your blood sugar at a healthy level really reduces your risk of these complications.

Diabetes is a multi-system disorder that primarily wreaks havoc if blood sugar levels are allowed to get too high and remain high for too long. The main complications are diabetic retinopathy, where you could slowly lose your vision; heart problems including hypertension and congestive heart failure and stroke; diabetic nephropathy, where your kidneys slowly stop working; and blood flow problems to extremities leading to ulcers and gangrene and possibly amputation. Research has also shown that diabetics with chronic high blood sugars are more prone to infection.
Keep that blood sugar under control!

It's not the sugar its the inability of their body to produce insulin to properly use the sugar. Without enough insulin someone can go into a diebetic coma.

it can do a lot. i should know, my dad has diabetes. it could cause blindness, amputation of the limbs and kidney failure.
blindness-A recent study shows that keeping your blood glucose level closer to normal can prevent or delay the onset of diabetic eye disease so having high glucpse levels in your blood can damage your nerves.

amputation of arms and legs-again, do to nerve damage and not being able to use them.

kidney failure-your kidneys have to work harder to filter the large amount of glucose you ingest.
