HP Is British, but you can find it in Canada, and I have seen it in some stores in the US. What they have is the equivalent to HP is A1 sauce, thou not as good, I prefer HP.
FYI, this American Knows HP, and loves it. We have it all the time in our fridge. Not knowing about a sauce is not a tragedy. It is just a sauce, and for those who don't know about it, it is not the end of the world, but when you do, you will like it too.
Erin D, do you know everything, or ever sauce ever made on Earth. Most likely NO. Don't be judgmental that isn't nice.

As you can tell from some of the answers, the reason why American restaurants don't have HP sauce is because most of America has no idea what the hell HP Sauce is. A tragedy really. I always keep a bottle in my fridge at home. It's good.

Brown Sauce is commonly found in the United States under the brand name A1 Steak Sauce. As the name implies, in the United States it is eaten primarily with steaks, while in the UK it is traditionally eaten with bacon and/or sausages.

because its British.. HP = House of Parliament, which is the image they used on the bottle and in their advert
(http://www.visit4info.com/sitecontent/LG/fullZZZZZZTVICL0308094214PIC.jpg)
invented in 1896 by Frederick Garton from Nottingham. He called the sauce HP because he had heard that a restaurant in the Houses of Parliament had begun serving it
It IS available via the web - UK foods are quite popular there:

Because they don't have a House of Parliament. They could have WH or CH sauce, but it wouldn't be the same.

You answered your own question: American food doesn't use those type of sauses. You're lucky if you get the waitress to bring you Louisiana hot sause, if she's nice!

There are 'British' shops in the USA for ex-pats (like we have Biltong shops over here for South Africans). They sell it!
