A smear test looks for pre cancerous, cancerous or abnormal cells, not STDs. However, while performing the proceedure they may see something that suggests an STD (for example, genital warts) and will tell you. If you are worried about STDs then you should get tested (you can do this anon if you like) & not have unprotected sex.

Do Smear Tests Detect Stds

2016-12-18 08:03:24 · answer #2 · answered by hughart 4 · 0 0

Most STD tests that are done only detect if you are positive for Trichamonas, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Yeast. It does not show if you have HPV or HIV. A pap test or Pap Smear is a preventative test to check for cells that could indicate early signs of cervical cancer or irregularities. This is how HPV is commonly diagnosed. On that note, if you are under 26y.o I suggest you ask about the Gardisil Vaccine to help prevent you from getting 7 of the main strains of HPV. If you have anymore questions, just give me a buzz and I will be glad to help if I can.

A smear test can detect some STDS if you have a good discharge for a sample. They take a sample of your discharge right then, mix it with a certain chemical which makes the bad bacteria stand out, look at it under a microscope and if it's there then they it has been detected. The best way to detect most is with a GOOD urine sample.

A smear test is for cervical cancer so they are looking for that, it would not be a reliable way to establish if there was a STD. You have to say you need tested for them and get a specific check. Just do it! Nothing to fear and no shame, just taking care of yourself...but remember the condoms...every time! Good luck!

Why have one?
A smear test can pick up abnormal changes in cervical cells, which are usually easy to treat if they are caught at an early stage, but it is not a test for cancer itself. It can also find signs of some hidden infections such as HPV, which is a form of wart virus that's been linked to cancer of the cervix.

Yes, your doctor can request that your pap smear be tested for "high and low" risks of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) HPV is the leading cause of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal dysplasia/cancer in women; as well as genital warts. However, most people never even know they have it because their bodies are able to fight it off. Ask your doc about HPV and testing.
