My friend brought over sushi last night and she brought eel/avocado rolls. The eel was cooked and she said if people ate raw eel that they would die. Can anyone confirm this?

I least I didn't.

I live in Japan and USUALLY I like and eat my eel cooked,

but you won't die is you eat it raw.
Perhaps she meant 'You'd die' because you wouldn't like it! \(^∇^)/
FYI~☆ If you eat 'Fugu' (blow fish) that has not been prepared right and by a certified 'fugu' chef, you'll die though.♡

EEL BLOOD IS POISONOUS! Answers thus far are incorrect and possibly lethal so I am bumping this.

Eel blood is poisonous, as small amounts can cause cardiac arrest. Yikes (for eight years)!

While some digestive systems can denature the toxin in the blood, any cut in the digestive tract will present a danger (as the blood may not have been destroyed enough to be harmless). Cooking is the only sure "fire" way to render the eels safe to eat.

Please do not answer question concerning public safety if you have not done research.

it it's a true eel, then you will see a pair of elongated nostrils above it's mouth and it should be in saltwater because all true eels are saltwater fish. but if you don't see nostrils then keep it in brackish water. if it's 6 inches or smaller feed it 1 piece of .5-1inch shrimp or other saltwater fish, but if it's 6-12 inches feed it 1 piece of 1-2inch shrimp or fish and if it's 12inches or longer give it 3-4 pieces of shrimp or fish. Never feed carnivorous saltwater fish any protein from fresh water. and the white stuff is probably excess slime from being in fresh or brackish water

That is not accurate. Eating raw eal will not kill you. It will not kill you to eat ANY animal raw.

The problem with raw meat is that bacteria can grow on it if you don't cook it. But if they is prepared professionally to prevent bacteria growth, raw meats are fine.
