Kay: If I were you I would spend every possible moment with your Mom. I am not a doctor but I taught CPR for the AHA. We received a lot of training around situations similar to this and I wouldn't give her a 50 50 chance of surviving. I am sorry, I wish I could be more cheerful but I think you want honest responses and this is an honest response.

The very best wishes and luck to both of you. I really hope I am wrong and receive a severe tongue lashing from both of you.

Angioplasty is good when a stint is placed in the closed arteries. However, some people develop scar tissue around the stint and that causes some problems. There is a new stint that was developed to counteract that problem.

She should make sure the doctor doing the procedure has a good deal of experience with the Angioplasty and stints.

If her heart is not working, hopefully the procedure will help. If it does, she needs to slowly help build her health up. Does she eat right? If she smokes, she must quit. She'll need to walk daily once she is able. Only God knows her chances.

Angioplasty isn't really an issue, its very common and rarely has any side effects. Considering your mothers age and heart condition the doctor may well be trying to alleviate some pain as the body would be trying to build new bloodvessels to get past the blockages. That is a very painful process. Opening the four arteries should alleviate a lot of that pain so that she is more comfortable.

I am not saying this to be harsh, but your mother is not well and you and your family need to realize that she is likely in the process of dying. It sounds like the doctor wants to make her as comfortable as possible so that she has an easier time in saying her good byes. If you guys have not already discussed her wishes now would bea good time to do so. We all pass and we all have to face that. It is better to me to prepare for a joyous passing and live every moment to the fullest with our families rather than dwell on what is going to happen anyway. Make sure your mom wants the surgery for herself as opposed to her perhaps feeling like she has to do it for the family.

Good luck, god bless and visit her often.

The clogged arteries will kill her if she doesn't have the surgery. My Mom is 73 years old and has a clogged carotid artery. She's nervous about the operation, but the clogged artery can cause a stroke or death. She's having the operation on Monday. I'll pray for your Mom as she ondergoes her surgery.

There is a certain risk associated with this kind of surgery, yes.

Any major surgery for someone of advanced years carries a risk of death.

Considering the overall condition of her heart, she will die soon without a procedure to increase blood flow in the arteries to the heart itself. So it is surely less risky overall to proceed with surgery.

Her cardiologist knows her overall health, cardiac health, medical condition and history and is the best one to answer this question. Angioplasty may be her best (and only) chance. Her cardiac function will begin to improve as soon as the first stent is in place and open.

Note to MadforMAX: The word is stent not stint.

There is new medicines that can open blockages without surgery and can be tolerated by older people.Don't just accept what the doctors tell you...check the most advanced heart center near you...good luck

Has the cardiologist not addressed your concerns? Please do not go through with the procedure if you have not been properly informed regarding the risks/benefits of this procedure. The Internet is not the place to get advice on life and death decisions. Demand that the doctor answer your questions, it is his/her responsibility.
