I'm looking for the name of a vegetable used in chicken dishes. It's white, tastes like onion and has the appearence of small potato cubes. I was told it was some type of Chinese onion. (It's not regular onion, because it can be cut into cubes).

Thanks. :(O)

Thanks! But it's not water chestnuts.

Like I said "as served in American restaurants". I'm obviously aware that the food served in informal Chinese restaurants varies from place to place. Believing otherwise is as foolish as thinking that over in China they use the large amounts of MSG we're acostumed to over here.

I will describe the dish:

Chicken, carrots, cellery, peanuts, onions and THE UNKNOWN VEGETABLE cut up into little cubes and cooked in peanut oil.

You're right. The vegetable has very little taste actually.

I think it might be either turnip or chinese white carrot (lo-pak). Turnip would have a distinct almost onion like taste right? hope this helps~

Do you think it tastes like onion because onion is also used to flavor the dish? A bland vegetable will seem to taste like the sauce poured over it. I have never seen this dish in my life and I have been living in China for three years. Is the restaurant in England or U.S.? Ask the waiter what is the name of the vegetable. I think the other answer about "lo pak" may be a Cantonese pronunciation of "bai luo bo" which is a white Chinese vegetable that has a taste between daikon and potato. I don't think there is any Chinese vegetable that tastes really like onion except onion and leek (milder than onion). In China, all leeks I have seen are very thin compared to western leeks. They resemble scallions / spring onions.

I really like both fruits and fresh vegetables better, regardless how they look and taste. You desire a little of both.

In the event it's a fruit they have seeds, otherwise it's a vegetable. And vegetables are usually grown in the ground while fruits are grown in trees.

It very well could be a "leek". Very much like a green onion.
(I personally prefer green onions, but perhaps I shouldn't editorialize!)

I think they're right... most likely turnip
but also could be:

Taro
Daikon radish
Parsnip
or
Rutabaga

...FYI these all happen to be root vegetables.
