Rennet is used in making cheese. Its a substance that contains rennin - an enzyme which is responsible for clotting or curdling of milk. And YES - it is obtained from the stomachs of calves.

Most hard cheeses do have rennet in them and yes it does come from calves stomachs but most supermarkets carry lines of cheese that is suitable for vegetarians that doesn't contain animal rennet. look for a green 'v' on the label. i'm vegetarian 15 yrs now.

Hello Supreeta,
Yes, that is where rennet usually comes from. You can get vegetarian cheeses made with non-animal rennet or rennet eqivalent. Look at the packaging it normally states if it is approved by the vegetarian society or sometimes just says 'Suitable for vegetarians'.
Hope this helps, honey!

Still, some of the cheese manufacturers use rennet during cheese making. The active ingredient of rennet is the enzyme, chymosin (also known as rennin). The usual source of rennet is the stomach of slaughtered newly-born calves.
Anyway, there are companies which use microbial enzymes (either fungal or bacterial sources) for coagulating the milk (Few examples in US: Horizon organic, Cabot (most of their cheeses) etc)
If you want a complete list, please feel free to go through these sites.

Yes, hard cheese has rennet in it. Here in the UK the majority of hard cheese is now made with a vegetable rennet as opposed to one which is animal based.
You also have to look out for products which have gelatin in them as that is most certainly animal based as well.

Rennet is what makes the milk into cheese kurds when the mixture is heated properly. It exists naturally in the stomach of cows. There are also man made substitutes that are commonly used in cheese production plants. I don't know what the ingredients are in the substitutes.
Kurds are typically melted together to make blocks of cheese.

i did some research several years ago, asking U.K stores whether they use aminal rennet in thier cheese, all the big names said that they use vegtable based rennet as this is the cheapest option. So beware of the 'vegaterian' cheese, which is the same as regular cheese but more expensive!

yup, most do but not all rennet comes from calves stomaches. there is man-made rennet but do watch out cause some in GM bacteria and who knows what that stuff will do to you? look out for labels that say non-GM non-animal rennet. and then eat up!
