It is not a disease. It is an abnormality in blood pressure.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a medical condition where the blood pressure is chronically elevated. While it is formally called arterial hypertension, the word "hypertension" without a qualifier usually refers to arterial hypertension.

Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and arterial aneurysm, and is a leading cause of chronic renal failure.

Hypertension can be classified as either essential or secondary. Essential hypertension is the term used when no specific medical cause can be found to explain a patient's condition. Secondary hypertension means that the high blood pressure is a result of (i.e. secondary to) another condition, such as kidney disease or certain tumors

Hypertension is a condition in itself, rather than a disease, that is caused by other factors in your body. For example, if you have CAD (coronary artery disease), or vascular disease, these can cause high blood pressure. If diagnosed with hypertension, your physician should look further to see what is causing it. Good luck!
