Hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose, happens when there is too much sugar in the blood.
Causes of hyperglycemia
* Skipping or forgetting your insulin or oral glucose-lowering medication
* Eating the wrong foods
* Eating too much food
* Infection
* Illness
* Increased stress
* Decreased activity

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Interesting.. they look the same to me - are you sure they weren't talking about HYPO-glycemic??

Diabetes is the inability to process glucose because of insufficient insulin production from the pancreas (Type I) or the body's inability to use the insulin it produces (Type II). These people would be hyperglycemic. I think your friend must be hypoglycemic to be considered opposite of the diabetic.

There is a lot of stuff on the internet that is basically fat-shaming diabetics for causing their own diabetes with their bad diet and lack of exercise and general lack of moral fibre. A lot of this stuff is written by non-doctors, often with a supplement or diet or training plan to sell that they claim will completely cure diabetes if only people stick to it.
I read this interesting book https://tr.im/pfxqc that gave me a lot of useful tips about my disease and also a different perspective on the best therapeutical approach. I think you should read it too.
