My 55-year-old type II diabetic friend went to a free clinic yesterday. Her blood sugar has been in the 200 to 350 range with occasional spikes in the 400's and 500's. She says it was 108 when they took it at the clinic. Also said that she only has to use her monitor once a day from now on. She is currently living in my home and has been very sick. Serious neuropathy in her feet, cataracts and retinal edema. Falls often. I am concerned that she isn't getting right-on advice, especially only checking her blood sugar once a day (after breakfast one day, after dinner the next). Does this sound right to you? I got some very helpful answers to the question I asked yesterday.

Hi
I have been a diabetic for 22 years and just found this website about 3months ago. This is a great website for diabetics.

Maybe there is a problem with her test strips if there is such a dramatic difference between her results and the clinics. I'd suggest that next time she goes to the clinic to take her monitor and do a test at the same time the clinic does one and compare the results.

It has been reported that there are some counterfeit diabetic test strips that give erratic results. Here are the brands:
Affected test strips include those for One Touch Basic/Profile (lots 272894A, 2619932, and 2606340) and One Touch Ultra (lot 2691191), marketed in 50-count packages with multiple-language labeling on the outer carton (English/Greek/Portuguese and English/French, respectively). They have been distributed nationwide, particularly in Ohio, New York, Florida, Maryland, and Missouri by Medical Plastic Devices, Inc, and Champion Sales, Inc.
Be sure she isn't using any of these. Good luck!

no no no....that is not right...if her Blood sugars are in the 200-350 range she is very sick Especially if it spikes to 400-500 range....THIS IS VERY SERIOUS!! This will lead to blindness, and neuropathy, as well as other very serious conditions...b4 she only checks it once a day she should check before and after everytime she eats....b4 a meal it should be between 80-120 and after it should be 120-180 NO MORE THEN THAT!!! This is the reason why she's sooo sick and will probably go into DKA (diabetic keotoacidosis), which could lead to death or hospitalization or coma....Best of luck

VERY bad advice!!! blood sugar of 400-500 is what I see in the ICU at work! No wonder she falls and has neuropath and retinal edema! she needs to take control of her life and medical care! She needs to find a new doc for starters, cause that one is TERRIBLE! She needs to keep on a strict diet for diabetics and she needs to exercise. She should also be checking her sugars before each meal and before bed.

Target stores has a store brand meter called Easy Pro. The meter is less than $10 and the strips are $21 for fifty strips. Very affordable. She is not getting good advice. There is still time to improve her life.

no its not. its a bit late for tight control with this lady, but its still important. She should be testing at least 3 times a day...they may be trying to cut her testing to her budget, it can be expensive. 200-350 is terrible control.
