This is absolutely Not true.

If you think you are having a heart attack, the first thing you should do is alert someone who is with you or near by. You may pass out very quickly (this is the most common first sign of a heart attack). You will want to have someone know that you need help.

There is a medical procedure where a doctor feeds a tube through the artieries of the heart. Durning this procedure, the doctor ask the patient to cough, this helps to stabilize the heart beat of the Normal beating heart during this proceedure.

Some how this got twisted into a way to stop heart attacks and has been referred to as "Cough CPR"..

Here is a link from the American Heart Association on this subject.

I don't know about stopping the attack, but they say cough every 2 seconds until medical help arrives. Doing this allows u 2 get oxygen 2 the brain, heart, blood and body --and the attack wouldn't be fatal.

Sounds like an old-wives tale. However, taking aspirin is not.. and Emergency department personnel will give people experiencing a heart attack an aspirin as soon as they arrive. So, the best thing to do is to call 9-1-1 immediately and let the professionals give the aspirin and cough only if you have to.

I will agree with the Nurse. I have never heard of that either. There's nothing you can do yourself to stop a true heart attack. I would pull over and call 911 and tell them where you are so medical help can get to you. With a heart attack you need to get advanced medical treatment ASAP! Hope this helps.

Recent articles in the newspaper and on the internet have stated that if you have chest pains and feel it may be heart related, you should cough excessively and get to a doctor/hospital. I've read these within the last 2 months.

Wanted to clarify one thing from a previous poster, when the paramedics show up for a heart attack victim, they don't give you an aspirin, they give you a small tablet of nitroglycerin to hopefully delay the effects of the heart attack.

Two years ago, at the age of 26, I was on the wrong end of receiving this information as I had to learn it first hand, and unfortunately, the hard way. When they gave me the nitro tablets, which they told me to hold under my tongue, they may as well have given me a tic-tac because it seemed about as useful.

No. A heart attack is caused when something blocks the flow of blood to the heart and the muscle begins to die. No amount of coughing is gong to reverse that.

I've heard that coughing will affect the heart, even that you can do your own version of CPR on yourself by coughing if you think you are having a heart attack! I'm sure I saw this on a documentary....

coughing will actually speed your heart rate up. Found that out this last time I had bronchitis. They hooked me up to an EKG.
