I've never heard of diabetic neurapathy to affect a person's mind to make them become mentally retarded. But that doesn't mean it can't happen. Usually when a person has diabetic neurapathy it affects their limbs like their hands and fingers and legs and feet and toes. I've had diabetic neurapathy since 1996 in the outside of my left leg and across my left foot and ankle. I haven't noticed anything majorly wrong with my mind to that degree.

Did you ever ask your family doctor about this? Perhaps he or she could ease your mind about this topic. You may also want to research this over the Internet. Knowledge is power and don't let anyone try to discourage you about this.

Good luck and I hope I was some what helpful.

as a general rule it can effect memory function. I personally have never heard of anyone becomming mentally disabled from it but that does not mean it is not possible. The key is prevention.. proper diet and following doctors orders so your body is not damaged too badly. I have had diabetes for many years and have no serious complications because i take my meds and take care of myself.

Diabetic Neurapthy is a debilitating disease. It causes the person a great deal of pain and many times people will develop numbness in the legs, feet and hands. Many people will also develop numbness in the facial area. Please in the future refrain the usage, "mentally retarded".

there's 4 different types of diabetic neuropathy... peripheral neuropathy causes pain or loss of feeling in toes feet legs hands arms. autonomic neuropathy causes changes in digestion and can cause hypoglycemia. Proximal neuropathy causes pain in the thighs, hips, and butt area.... and focal neuropathy results in sudden weakness of one nerver or a group of nerves causing muscle pain or weakness....

so it doesn't cause a person to become mentally disabled.
