I'm not a doctor, I just play one on tv,, just kidding.. anything for a cough, I'd suggest the ole southern hot toddy.. get you a shot glass, one shot bourbon, or whiskey, sqeeze of lemon juice and a dab of honey, microwave for about 10 seconds.. if you don't drink.. and this isn't for you..

steer away from salty liquids,, no chicken soup, (it's itchy to me at least), gatorade, or even hot chocolate.. .. try hot tea, lemon water, powerade, or theraflu. Limit your talking, to rest the pipes, but be sure to drink plenty of water in some form.

My advice is bound to be met with opposition, but I dont' jump for medicines each time I get a little itch in my throat.. just giving you some common sense tactics for treatment.

Hope you're feeling better soon! Whiskey can at least make you rested, so will the theraflu...

Upper respiratory infection usually presents with cough or colds. When your phlegm is whitish and nasal discharge is colored white, it is just viral. You dont need any antibiotic for this. Just increase your water or juice intake. It is the best mucolytic.
However, when the phlegm gets colored, like yellowish, greenish, then it is a bacterial infection. Consult your doctor for he will be giving you an antibiotic.
If coughing is associated with pneumonia or bronchitis, antibiotic should also be given since there are phlegm heard as rales.
if coughing is associated with wheezes ( what doctors hear in the stetoscope) then bronchodilators are given, depending on the severity, whether it should be inhaled with a metered dose inhaler or with a nebulizer.
Better consult your doctor!

Go to the drugstore and ask for Carbocistine 500mg or Solmux 500 mg. Take it 3 times a day without a miss for 7 days. If you miss one it could be dangerous. And if you still have cough, go to the doctor it could be more than a cough. Like TB or pneumonia and bronchitis.

Please take half-a-teaspoon of honey and mix 5 drops of ginger juice. Mix it for 2 minutes. Now apply this mixture in the throat area. The cough will stop. Apply in the night also to get a peaceful sleep.

See if you can get the following ingredients:

Black Pepper 10 gms
Dry Ginger 05 gms
Tuermeric whole 05 gms

Powder the above, mix it in a glass of water and boil it till the bubbles come on. Cool it down to the luke warm level. Filter this and take this mix three times a day. The residue after filtering can be kept and can be boiled another day.
When you drink this mixture, you will sweat and this is natural. Therefore, please do not worry about the sweat.

See a Dr. Might have pneumonia or bronchitis. I did it Tuesday. Other than that, drink hot drinks. They might help loosen up anything in your chest.

It really depends on what is causing your cough, as to what to tell you to do. Is it because you have post nasal drip, a viral or bacterial infection...?
