I went to the doctor today and I had major blood work done including HIV and STDs. Now I am worried because I don't know if my results will be accurate or if something might come out positive when is not. I've been taking Antibiotics for almost a week now. Could that have any effect on the results?

That shouldn't affect your results at all. To test for HIV and STD's usually they just do a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction, you can look it up on wikipedia.org if you want to learn more about it) which basically takes one strand of your DNA and copies it like 1000 times very quickly and then they look for the HIV virus on those strands. If your results came back negative and you don't have HIV or any STDs then you should be fine. Antibiotics shouldn't have any affect on the PCR. Just be sure that if you're sexually active to be checked often....and....protect yourself :-)

Here is the simple answer, Antibiotics do their work on bacteria, also of STDs are viruses (including AIDS)... differnt completely... they look for a virus and not a bacteria when testing, so the antibiotics will not show up at all. like the #1 answer said, they use PCR so unless the antibiotics effect the PCreaction, which happens depending on the antibiotic (tetracyclens for example) then you'll be ok, they usually have an additiive in their PCR cocktail to eliminate contaminant such as that.

Your antibiotics will not effect your test results. If you test postive for HIV it will not be because of the meds your on. Wishful thinking but it will not effect your tests
