If you eat california rolls, you won't have to eat raw fish. A lot of people love them. If you like spicy, then go for the spicy tuna roll. You might even like the sushi with wasabi. The more fancy and expensive the roll, the better the sushi. I also love anything with avocado in it. YUM.

If you are going to get sushi for the first time make it a quality experience. Try and find a place where there are real Japanese chefs as this usually indicates that the sushi will be of better taste and quality. PLEASE avoid sushi rolls from the grocery stores that have been sitting around for like two days lol. These taste so bad, and SOO different from the better quality sushi. You can tell sushi has been sitting out for too long when the rice grains sort of merge together.. to form like a lumpy solid white ring around the sushi filling, rather than individual rice grains stuck together! Bon appetite!

TASTE: Sushi takes sorta like what you would expect. Its like a more glutonoius (chewy) rice wrapped with fresh ingredients (varies). You can barely taste the seaweed paper wrap. That part basically is just used to hold the entire sushi together.
RAW FISH: Raw fish can be too dramatic or gross for beginners but you will get used to it. In my opinion it doesn't taste bad at all. Sashimi (plain raw fish) is okay IF you don't eat too much of it.
SUSHI TYPE: There aren't many 'spicy' types of sushi out there. They have a mild (light) spicy taste. These are the typical types: Spicy Tuna Roll, Spicy Salmon, Spicy Crispy Salmon, and Firehouse Roll.
SAUCES: Typically sushi is dipped with soya sauce. However, it tastes great by itself too! Don't force yourself to use it if you don't like it. Oh, and don't dunk it in just dip it in. Since you like spicy foods, add and mix wasabi to the soya sauce. Wasabi is that green mushy paste. Just add enough to your liking. Ginger is also optional.

Magaro (tuna) is a good one to start with if you want to try one with sashimi (raw fish). California roll if you want one without sashimi - it has cucumber, avocado and cooked crab meat. The ones with the little round orange balls on the top are usually sea urchin eggs and are incredibly salty.
The slight fishy taste generally comes from the nori (seaweed) wrap. The rice will be slightly tangy due to the vinegar-based seasoning in the rice.
The wasabi people are talking about is the green paste usually served with the sushi. This is a type of horseradish. It can be mixed into soy sauce to create a dip. The more you use, the spicier it gets. It can really heat up fast...
If soy sauce is too salty for you, ask for the dipping sauce that is used with tempura. It has a light pleasant flavor, but is less salty.

Ok now, good raw fish should not taste like fish. They have strict temperature (I think is 33 or 37 degree Fahrenheit) at the sushi bar to keep the fresh fish fresh. Sushi, maki (rolls), sashimi are normally eat with wasabi and soy sauce. Wasabi is like horseradish so because not to over load your sushi.
Go to a reputable sushi restaurant that are crowded and look bright and clean. You want to be able to see how they prepare. The area should be clean at all time when they preparing.
Actually, the seaweed or nori is the one that is fish and they are PLANT.......
You will love it.

I LOVE sushi!!!!! But their are alot of varieties and not all toppings pair well with all of the different varieties. My favorite is called "Philly Roll". It's rice, cream cheese and salmon..just put a little bit of wasabi, soy sauce and a slice of ginger and it taste great. If you can't handle raw fish, alot of varieties have steamed shrimp or imitation crabmeat inside. I think you should go to a sushi buffet, so that you can mix & match different flavors. Also, I learned alot by getting suggestions from the guys at the restaurant that make it.....good luck

to me it tastes fine, not really any taste, but if the chef did it poorly ie the fish was not fresh, u might have some bad smell therefore go to a nice restaurent.
you could start off with cooked fish then slowly progress..
sushi goes with soy sauce, and wasabi generally, though i dont like wasabe and i eat it with soy sauce or by it self only.
some times u find thin slices of reddish ginger to go along too but i dont like those either.
my favourite is salmon too! sashimi is just plain raw fish, and dats really good too..but it must be fresh once again..
enjoy!
