A doppler is a portable ultrasonic unit. This unit can be used to look for blood flow in certain areas where you cannot find with palpation. Also a portable doppler is used on pregnant mothers to locate babies heartbeat. The only thing changed are the probes used depending on the Depth needed for the soundwaves to find the area of interest. Now for echo, a full scale ultrasound machine is mostly used.

A doppler is used to listen to arterial blood flow. In some patients you may not feel a pulse so you use a doppler to listen to the artery.
