installing a new theme for windows xp

You'll need Windows Blinds for that.

But, I recommend using a patcher called UXTheme. It doesn't slow down the computer much compared to Windows Blinds considering it's just a patch. Search for it at Google or another search engine.

Originally, Windows only runs on themes that Microsoft have 'signed'. This patcher allows any theme to be able to work. You can get the themes from http://www.customize.org . On the left, there's a directory, look at Shell Themes > XP Visual Styles.

The theme files will be in .msstyle extension and will include .dll (Dynamic Linked Library) files.
