I would agree that it would be better in terms of reading and will help in understanding well. People during that time have the talent in drawing or depicting, art was never been strange during that time. The question here is why? The word of God was been taught plainly. Remember the law that prohibits in planting different crops in a field? I think, there is something about putting drawings that God did not allow since that time.

Considering how the Bible is being interpreted these days I believe they would have resorted to special effects or trick photography.

Yeah, but I don't know if the photo's would have lasted this long. They probably would have faded within recognision lol.
