I get headaches once and a while.. you know, the kind from being a mom of 2 little boys who always has tonnes of stuff to do. But lately, I've been getting a different kind of headache. They're weird and kinda scary. First, nothing hurts but I've come to learn that they start with my vision. Everything gets all.. different.. kinda like you're high.. black and dark in the middle and white and fuzzy on the outside.. things look farther away than they really are, or closer. Then, after about 1/2 hour of this, the pain starts, and nothing helps.. and it's pain like nothing I've ever felt before, and lasts for hours. And I can't do anything. It's making being a mom very hard. Is this what a migrane is? I've never had one before, but my hubby and mother tell me that it's probably migraines.

Definitely sounds like a migraine.
My mom and brother get them regularly, and see doctors for them. I got a migraine about every other week during the first trimester of my pregnancy, and then only one other time, a week after my baby was born. (I'm living in Japan, so I didn't talk to a doctor about them; I knew they wouldn't recommend that I take any medication while pregnant and probably wouldn't have any other recommendations.)
If you're getting them frequently and continue to get them, you should see a doctor. It might help to also start keeping a journal noting food and sleep patterns. This could help you and your doctor figure out what's triggering them.
One thing that is happening when you have a migraine is that the blood vessels in your head are dilating and there is too much blood flowing into your head. Some things that help:
* Tying something a bit tightly around your head, like a bathrobe belt or an elastic band. It helps reduce some of the blood flow. (My husband laughed at me, but it did help.)
* Putting something cold on your neck and the part that hurts the most. Again, this helps shrink the blood vessels. (Heat is not good for migraines since it will help the blood flow more.)
* Caffeine (I drank a bit of slightly flat Coke. The caffeine helps constrict the blood vessels, and the Coke syrup helps settle your stomache a bit, if you're feeling nauseous or throwing up.)
* Some kind of pain relief drug. I usually took ibuprofen, since it's also an anti-inflammatory. My brother swears by Tylenol. Since different medications work better for different people, find which one works best for you.
* Lie down somewhere quiet. One thing though, if you catch it quickly before the pain gets too bad, you can get away with not completely shutting down. If you take some pain medication when the signals are just starting, and slow down slightly for the rest of the day (try not to make any sudden, strenuous moves which will get your heart rate up), there's a good chance that it won't become a full blown migraine. If you can take medication and lie down somewhere quiet at the early stage before it becomes a headache, you might also be able to kick it completely within an hour or two and never get the pain.
Good luck!

Hi, I have migraines myself. Each person's migraine is a bit different. I have seen many doctors and even resorted to giving myself injections to get rid of them. Sometimes life changes bring on the migraines, or even body changes. Mine started after my second child. After it all I recommend...see the Dr. After you are sure it's only migraines try the over the counter meds. Take them when you think you might be getting a headache, Don't Wait! and take the maximum dose for a day. If I hit it very strong in the beginning it goes away before I'm in much pain. This is what has been working for me for a year now. And know that this isn't always for life. The migraines may get less severe or less frequent as time goes by.

It does sound like a migraine, but you really should see a dr to rule out any underlying cause. Herbal supplements are great for headaches and migraines. Especially great for MOMS. They can help relieve tension and stress that may be the cause. This site has great info. Good Luck!

Oh those are migranes for sure. Some people develop them later in life. You should see a doc anyway, if they are severe they can give you medicine or even give you a shot to help. Try to lay down in a dark room with a warm towel on your head right when you feel them coming and take a nap. I hope you feel better.

My sister used to get migranes, she might still, but they would sometimes get so painful it would make her throw up. It can not be easy with 2 little ones. There is medication though that can help subside the symptoms from what I've heard.
When you are having one of these head aches are you very sensative to bright light? I remember my sister couldn't have the light on.
Please see a Doctor.

Go to your doctor right away. My friend started having migraines and found out that he has a cyst. I don't want to scare you but have your doctor check it out right away.
