Art is a tricky thing to get into without a college degree. Art is an "pure academic" in that art itself is not a practical field, but rather an intellectual field.
At one point, ofcourse you could have painted portraits. However, portraiture is pretty redundant with photography.
Graphic Arts and Design is exceptionally difficult to enter without college, though, not impossible. I do not have a college degree and am working in advertising. If you want to go this route, you will need a pretty extensive portfolio. I would suggest start now by paying very close attention to advertising, discecting every word, every line, and every bit of composition
You can always work for yourself as a photographer, designer or gallery artist. Gallery art comes in two varieties, stuff that goes in museums and stuff that goes on your living room wall.
Chasing the gallery market takes a LOT of comittment and patience, you will need to know how to market yourself and BS a lot. Never shy away from pretension, but never go over the top.
Goodluck!
PS: Yahoo is hardly a formal place - ignore the spelling.

we always want everything for nothing...good luck! Call yourself Picasso and paint blindfolded, they'll never know the difference...MO MONEY, MO MONEY, MO MONEY! How about an internship through college? Graphic Arts can lead to all kinds of careers. Computer animation is the highest paying these days. Just think of the high demands of production companies with computer generated animation over the last 10 years. You could also get into designing video games with the same education. click the link and see!

Wrong mix of words....high paying and art. Even high paying and college doesn't always work anymore. Best bet is to stay in school, try a bit harder, pay attention to details (like spelling, especially when spellcheck s available) because that's what high paying employers are looking for...good communicators, whether art or engineering. Only real answer to your question, and the scenario you've painted, is to become an art thief with a good fence.

Disney used to buy characters that you made up yourself... they buy the drawing and the idea they come up with for them they paid for. I don't know if they still do that. I know that if you get a job at sherwin williams or a high up painting place they have you paint houses, or just tell people about mixing colors and that is easy stuff to just try to sell what they have by being informative... and sometimes they put you through school to be of better use to them...

There are artists at some of the larger printing houses, but without training and no college, there is not much I can suggest.
Check into web design.
