The quick answer is that you can't. You have to make a judgement call based on what you know about him:
How does he treat you?
Does he have lots of exs?
How does he treat other women?
You need to decide if you trust him to be faithful or not. If you don't the realtionships doomed to a quick end already.

A player will always smooth talk you. He's good at it so you WILL believe it. He will promise you the world and when he doesn't deliver, another smooth answer. He WILL make you feel good just to get what he wants but only when he wants. He has no problem lying to you like telling you that maybe he loves you or other "deeper" more serious things. When pushed into a corner about maybe phone calls or e-mails he might get a little edgy. Sometimes if he's confident enough he will even say to you that he doesnt need the fights or arguments. An honest guy will fight even just a little to try sort out the problem WITHOUT trying to smooth talk his way out. Its difficult but the best is to go with your gut instinct and if you suspect and are not happy then probably the hardest thing but best thing to do is walk away. If you think you can play him at his own game. Sorry you lose. PS just listen to that little voice inside.

Give him the benefit of the doubt, until he says or does otherwise.
I used to be a player (oh yeah, it was fun, the stories I could tell...mmmmm) so I'm used to being grilled about this. A real player will admit that he's a player, and as long as he's upfront about it, most women in my experience will accept it.
Kind of sexy too, because then the woman will work real hard trying to "reform you", and that only works to the player's advantage especially when she tries proving no one is better in bed than she is.
I don't understand why it's so noble to "come out" as gay these days, but not cool to come out as a player. I think players should all come out of the closet, open up, and be honest about their chosen lifestyles. Lots of women will accept it!! JUST ADMIT TO IT!!

we're all players, the question you should ask is what game are you playing and what game is he playing? If you're both playing the same game, you may both come up winners. If not then someone has to lose. Research his intentions to find out if he's worthy of playing with you

its hard to know if he's a player... they're a good manipulater you know... but the best thing is when something goes wrong, you'll get the instinct that he is a player...

Well, he might play football, or darts,. Does he belong top any clubs, that may give you a clue as to whether he plays anything or not.
