One thing that I started doing for ALL kids, especially the girls in this age bracket is money, but mix it up a bit. For an 8 year old give it in "8's" Tape it all to a piece of card stock. 8 singles, 8 quarters, 8 dimes, nickels, pennies, and if you have a token type place, ie: Chuckie Cheese, Adventure Landing etc, tape those too. The kids just go crazy, it doesn't matter "how much" is there to them, they just see all that cash and think they hit the jackpot. Works everytime, and it is great for those last minute, oopps I forgot to go to the store times. You can supplement with a little gift too if you wanted, but I found this with a card is good. Wrap it up real nice too.

She's probably got a favourite toy or character or TV show she enjoys. Ask your boyfriend and get her something to do with that. When I was 8 I used to love Barbies for example so anything with Barbie on it whether it was a rucksack or a new Barbie Doll was always a winner with me.

A toy, a dvd she doesn't already own, clothes, a mini trampoline (trampette). All things my young nephews and nieces would appreciate.
Or offer to take her out and she can pick something small that she would like- that way she can't say she doesn't want it.

I think in that age group you have a lot to chose from, if she likes dressing up there are lots of little outfits try woolworths or you and your boyfriend take her shopping with you and let her chose something she would probably love that. Otherwise go to the disney shop lots to chose from there.

A small (25$) gift certificate to Toys R Us. Then you aren't going against your moms wishes and seeing as kids all like different things, she can pick out what she wants with her mom making sure its ok too.

Its really hard to like a present. You should ask your boyfriend which store does she usually go to and buy her a gift card. you can buy a lovely box and put colorful m&ms inside buy a cute neackles (maybe a heart shaped) and then put a gift card.
