At my undergraduate university, one of the professors could show evidence that rats laugh, just not within the human hearing range. And I'm sure that many other animals do the same, and we just can't hear it or recognize it. I think the statement is meant to imply that emotions are what make us human. Though I don't think that is so either. My pets sure look like they can be excited, depressed, etc.

it depends how you want to know it scientifically I'm guessing it was a desired characteristic (it is proven that people who laugh more live longer and I'm guessing there is a reduced chance of chemical in balance in the brain or depresstion that could cause suicide therefore reducing the chance of reproduction) so was bred through natural selection and therefore evolution religiously it could be a god given gift linking with happiness socially it could be again bred through natural selection as a form of communication enhancement. Laughing is a way of communicating and socializing. Socializing enhances life quality.

Dogs and hamsters are known to laugh. And other animals too. Its just hard for us to distinguish the sounds. I saw few articles few months ago on this. But I don't think dogs will laugh at Seinfeld episode.

Definitely not, monkeys can laugh too. Laughter is just the next evolution gain. What makes you human is... well, there is no definition, no distinguishing feature, unfortunately even intelligence isn't.

The thing that makes us human is the ability to NOT respond to a stimulus.

Self-control is what makes us human. it empowers us to change ourselves.
