Why do humans require air?
Because they can't live without it.

Belief is any IDEA that a person is prepared to act upon.

If you decide to have bacon and eggs at the restaurant you believe in bacon and eggs and restaurants. You further believe that having bacon and eggs at that location will be pleasant.

Quite frankly you are in the mental process of belief during every waking moment. Without belief you would not move.

Your question is really: Why do humans believe ideas which go beyond every day experience. The answer is simply because we can.

As for purpose, staying alive defines that for us as well as animals.

As for hope, we were born with more or less of it and that is all most humans know of God. Hope is the only experience of God that many people will ever have. You are very correct in saying we use belief to produce hopes but those hopes are usually of short duration and we still haven't explained Why we hope?

There is no correct answer in the first ten responders. One person states that belief is a gift. They have belief and faith confused.

//////////Stick with the questions about belief and faith. You are digging in a spot where treasure is hidden. If you functionally define belief and faith in your head, and relate them to your own emotions, you will be in a position to know all things.

Because we are all ignorant and weak.
We don't know how to solve our problems and we don't have strength to overcome difficulties. At desperate moments we rely on any power - even imaginary power or evil power - which leads us to a silly death.
If we rightly realized earlier this fact and seeked for the divine guidance from the Divine Messenger of the One True God, we would learn the perfect lessons to conduct a knowledgeable and mighty life, then the case is completely different.
Belief, as mentioned here, is not blind imitation, but it is consciuos knowledge, resolution to live a good life and to act in accordance to the divine teachings.

I think it is because we need an explanation for how and why we are here, the bible give us that and also it inspires hope and helps people get thru suffering and the pain of a lost loved one who has passed away.
