Dogs are like people some are intelligent and some are not. Some are bred for specific purposes such as hunting and some are bred for pets. A springer be it English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish breeding are gundogs and therefore have a lot of energy. I have had eight dogs in my lifetime, never more than two at the same time. With the exception of one all were large dogs mostly golden retrievers and springers. All were exceptional dogs in different ways. However, my sister has a springer that was 15 last August and it still plays with his toys and looks for his twice daily walks. You mentioned the term loopy. This dog is the most intelligent I have ever seen. He has five tennis balls all different colours and if you tell him to fetch the red one he will bring the red one. If you tell him to fetch the yellow one he will fetch the yellow and never makes a mistake. He also has a plastic spider, a wolly crow, a squeaky toy, a snowman and others and if you ask him to fetch any one of these he will and will never bring the wrong one. My sister spend a lot of time training him when he was young and if you don't train them then they could be loopy.

The English Springer spaniel is a working dog and NOT a pet. This is why the rescue centeres are full of them. They look so cute and people with no knowledge of working dogs get them as pets and then find that they have wrecked the house.
If you train you Springer correctly he will not be loopy as you say. I have had English springers and they were perfectly well behaved, the problem is NOT with the dog but with the owner as most people do not take their dogs to classes to learn obedience.
And most owners talk to their dogs like they understand English and try to reason with them, that is why they are loopy.
If you train your dog correctly he will be a lot better to manage.
I would like to bet that he pulls on the lead, makes a big fuss every time you come in, and is rather uncontrolable and jumps up on your visitors. Am I right? I bet I am. Well correctly trained all these bad habits will stop.

English Springer Spaniels are not always loopy.
Springers were bred as working dogs and as such need stamina and enthusiasm. They also need to be intelligent and trainable.
A good working Springer Spaniel is a valuable asset.
However many Springers are bred indiscriminately and go to homes where they are required to be 'pets'. As such they do not get the required mental stimulation and physical exercise that they need.
Hence frustrated, loopy dogs.
I suggest you go to see a demonstration of working Springers to see what these great dogs are capable of before labelling them all 'loopy'.

I know exactly what your talking about. I have a Welsh Springer Spaniel. He is nearly 7 years old and still has the energy of a puppy.

Because like everyone has mention they require alot of time and energy.
Loads of walks along with games to stop boredom, dogs are pack animals and resent being left alone and will get bore very quickly.
Springer's make marvellous companions and really are the Tiggers of the dog world full of the joys of spring all the time.
Like any dog exercise and motivation are really important.
Hope you have loads of energy and know long walks.
Have fun

Because they are supposed to be working outdoors, not sitting in front of the TV with their owner. They were bred to work all day long, so of course they have a lot of excess energy as a house pet.

They are not always. Show bred ESSs are not loopy at all. Field bred and randomly bred tend to be pretty wild.
