For Jews, there are 613 commandments spread out throughout the Pentateuch (5 books of Moses). It was too big a load for Moses to carry down the mountain though.

For everybody else, there are the 7 Noachide commandments.

So, the 10 is really a massive contraction of the whole lot.

The commandments however, really only concern the Jews. Jesus tried to modify the whole issue which was one of the complaints the Sanhedrin had against him - heresy. his followers continued and extended the range of heretical belief, thus changing xtianity from an offshoot of judaism into a competitor.

Ever since man walked out of the garden and even before he seemed to have a problem getting it right. So God made it simple with just 10 little rules, and man still doesn't get it right.
But thank God Almighty for Jesus. He got it right for all of us.

Jews need specificity. The rest of us need to learn to read between the lines. to each is given what they need. Who knows except that you have to admit people are really good at rationalizing around. He was just giving the top Two, in a response to being asked for the first one. You have to give Him credit for a quick wit. He covered every moral issue in one command, how cool is that??

God needed to set them out as Man (or Woman) is a simple creature and needs this level of explanation and clarity, otherwise you could have just one commandment eg. be a good person or something similar. But god made it more explicit and easier for us to understand.

Jesus clarified these ten commandments in the NT even if you just THINK about somebody with lustful thoughts you have already committed adultery. Read the rest of them in the NT.
