You are definitely right, when you said he is being pathetic!
Seems to me that he is selfish, clingy and insecure.
I say just be cold and shut him out of your life.

Maybe he is going through heart ache and is having a hard time dealing with it. Give him sometime and he will slowly slip away. Just dont mess with him and drag him along.
