I know that 100 is considered average, 120 is quite smart and that 140 is genius. The tests are supposed to be adjusted for age.

Your age is irrelevant. In theory, your IQ should remain the same throughout your life. An IQ score is calculated by dividing your mental age by your actual age. E.g. if you were 10 years old and scored on an IQ test as well as the average 12 year old would score, your IQ would be 12/10 = 120.
Experts in psychology and education continue to debate IQ testing and how valid it is as a measure of someone's intelligence.
It's generally agreed that someone with a high IQ is likely to be good academically because they are good at learning. But there are other kinds of intelligence.
A recent article in the New Scientist quoted research that suggested that people with 'genius' IQs (over 150) in childhood rarely become 'genius' adults. Most people who achieve great things in adulthood have above average, but not hugely above average, IQs.
An example was the physicist Stephen Hawking who was apparently nothing special until he started to do graduate work on black holes. He became enthused and then did the important work on this subject that made him famous.
Apparently great achievement (whether you are Mozart or Tiger Woods) nearly always requires at least a decade of hard effort and practice and a very good teacher.
Basically, 117 is a perfectly respectable score. It means you're above average. But remember IQ is not the be-all and end-all. Enthusiasm and effort will take you further.
Hope this helps. From someone trying to work towards being a very good teacher (haven't done 10 years yet!).

IQ tests are only meaningful in relation to the others who take the test and are normally adjusted for age. The median is supposed to be 100 so if you get 117, and the test has been administered correctly yes it is good-above average

It depends on which IQ test you took. there are several and they all score slightly differently.
But as a general guide, if you are a right-wing Bush supporting American Christian, then 117 is a very high level of genius. because most others who fit that category have an IQ of about 10

many people are good at many things but only a few achieve great things. IQ doesnt mean anything you could be a rocket scientist and not have a clue how to boil an egg.

Depends where u got the results. Online IQ tests are never EVER correct, i got 143 on one once, and i doubt if i'm really the brainy, so i'd say stick to what you've got, and that i suggest is humble learning. =)

real IQ test scores are adjusted for age.
(99% of online IQ tests are crap, and most people never take a real IQ test.)
