Yes its a bit like child benefit a higher award for the first child and reduces a little bit for each. It also depends on your circumstances for example if you have a disabled child you will get different amounts. Basically its different for everyone based on your current circumstances.

Child benefit is not means tested, and everyone with a child gets it (unless they are earning over about £60,000 per year when it now. gets taken back as tax). Child tax credit is a means tested benefit for parents on fairly low incomes, who get their wages topped up to give them a certain minimum income.
