I'm in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, which is a fairly quiet village, though it isn't so small anymore. There are lots of other smallish villages around us and we are around 8 miles from Barnsley in one direction, 7ish from Huddersfield in another, about 12 from Wakefield, 25 from Leeds, 25 from Sheffield and Manchester is around 35 miles away. We have a small supermarket in the village, four pubs and for the youngsters we have a science college of excellence plus the decent primary schools. We have a football team, a cricket team...the youngsters won a trophy this year. We also have an excellent brass band and I go sailing not too far away. In either direction we have the larger cities of Hull, York and Liverpool not too far away either. We are reasonably close to the M1 and the M62 and if we head off through Barnsley towards Doncaster we have the A1, though if you are going north just stay on the M1 as the two become one above Leeds . There is a good train service from Huddersfield and Wakefield.

It used to be the case that all small villages were close community orientated but this was eroded by people moving just to go to work in the nearest city and never had the time for the community so when new people move in they are labelled as the same and ignored you wold have to make an effort if you were to try it

Asfordby its a beutifull place and is within 1 hours drive of leicester northampton nottingham and birmingham and as you have probably worked out by now is roughly in the middle of england about 1 1/2 hours from london goodluck with your search.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to find work and live in the same village. I have lived in a village (not far from Bristol) for 30 years, and ALL the jobs go to those who DRIVE from the nearby CITIES. As a result I spend 3 hours a day travelling to and from Bristol by Bus to work.

Depends on what you are prepared to spend on a property. But look around East Anglia area and only just over an hours drive to London and the you Have Norwich, Ipswich.

Some lovely villages in some beautiful countryside in Cheshire. Close to North Wales and Liverpool and Manchester. but you may need a fair bit of cash to live in this region.

Hailsham, East sussex - small market town with Hellingly, and Herstmoncaux (with a castle) on your door step. Eastbourne 15 mins away...(and its not full of old people any more) loads of shopping, and nearest city is Brighton, 35-40 mins away on the A27.
beautiful weather in summer, not so icy in winter because of the sea air. ideal!
Easiest way to Hailsham depending on where you live is Via A22.
I know i live there, and i wouldnt live anywhere else!

Dedham /Langham or Stratford St Mary in Colchester - 45 minutes by train into Liverpool Street station.

I agree with one of the other answerers, Bristol is a good choice, you might want to try around Worcester to which is a hours commute to Birmingham, you may also want to look on the outskirts of Manchester too.
