Normally it is after the wedding to say that you will love ther person eternally. (I wonder why I have never got one from my husband of 32 years!!!)

Hi i just googled this question for you and came up with this answer, hope it helps :-D
How Long Is An Eternity?
Opinions vary widely as to an appropriate time for the giving and receiving of an eternity ring.
De Beers and the Diamond Promotion Service would have you all believe that the first wedding anniversary is the right time. I suppose it beats paper!
Others believe that the birth of the first child is an appropriate time, and if most men could empathise with their wives over the pain of childbirth, I am sure they would gladly prefer to buy an eternity ring, than to go through the alternative.
We believe it is for the individual couple to decide upon an appropriate time for an eternity ring.
We hear much good-natured banter between couples discussing the fact that a year together seems like an eternity, or that the wife has head to wait an eternity, or some variation on this theme.

Never heard of it. If you want to buy her a ring then just do it, or tell her you would like to buy her another ring, is this to mark an anniversary? I think you should ask because maybe she would rather have some nice earrings or a necklace instead. I asked my sisters if they ever heard of an "eternity ring" and they all said no and together we have over 100+ yrs. of Marriage....makes you wonder if this isn't a "Jewelry Store Plot" just to drum up business? One thing was agreed upon, we all have some piece of jewelry that our mates picked out that we are not happy about and we did not say a word so as not to cause hurt feelings! We agreed that a person should buy whatever piece of jewelry "you and your mate" like, because spending a lot of money is just ridiculous if the person isn't happy with it. Don't forget that too many rings just looks cheap and take away from a wedding ring and some people are just not comfortable with wearing more than one ring. Ask her opinion, she'll love you more for you thinking of her in such a special way. Hope this helps. Good luck to You.

I thought eternity rings had stones (diamonds or mixed) all the way round. Rings with three stones, i thought, represented 'our past, our present and our future).
I would have thought an eternity ring came later, as an extra special anniversary present..... when you have been married a while, to show that your love will go on for eternity.
My mother had an eternity ring and she was married for 67 years.

MM - interesting answers. I've never heard of the first anniversary or the first child one. I always thought they were really to be given around the Silver wedding anniversary or 25 year mark. Because I always thought you were supposed to prove your marriage was going to last forever, first.
Having said this my first husband bought me one on our first anniversary - it was beautiful it had 4 rubies and 5 diamonds in it -I really didnt feel I'd been married long enough but I was so proud he loved me for all eternity . Well - for another 12 years anyway until he traded me in for a younger model!!
This time round I dont have one yet - I've been married for 17 years - I suppose we've never had the money to throw around. I'd want a proper one - a band with big diamonds at least half way round it.
So I'm prepared to wait until the 25 year mark when we've got no mortgage and he would be able to afford to buy a lovely quality one.

An eternity ring comes after the marriage.
I don't think theres a set time !!! An anniversary is when you usually get one.
I'm married 2 years next May and i'm getting one then. Some people might think thats a bit soon but why wait !
I will be with my husband for eternity xx

Eternity rings are traditionally given after the birth of your first child (after you're married).

I think you should buy an eternity ring once you are married and to show your loved one that you are still in love with them whether it be 10 weeks, 10 months or 10 years! no matter the occasion

Well, fisrt comes the friendship ring...
then committment ring.. (thats if you're almost serious enough 4 the stroll down the aisle)
Then of course the engagement ring (which we all know what that means)
Then the (da-dada-DA) Wedding ring...
And after about 20 years of solid, happily ever after totally splurge on the hugest rock you can find... Eternity here we come!

They're technically made to be given on anniversarys or for renewing your vows, but I see a lot of people using them as engagement or wedding rings instead of buying a band set. I know that I certainly like them better than wearing two rings because I'm not a big jewelry person. Plus, they are so pretty, simple, and classy.

it is actually supposed to be given after marraige on the birth of your first child... if however you do not have children, then it tends to be on the 10th anniversary.
and the myth about three stones is not quite true, although there may be three of one colour in the ring. it is usually a band of stones all or part of the way round. so that to look at it, the stones go on and on for eternity. hence the name.
