Nothing, she's simply had enough and doesn't know of any other way to tell you, in fact, she probably had been trying to tell you for a while. Keep an eye on her tail while you're petting her and if she starts lashing it or twitching it sharply then she's probably getting annoyed.

Ever have something feel so good it almost becomes painful?? Or have someone tickle you and it's fun for a bit then gets painful?
some cats are like that... they enjoy the lovings, but it overloads their sensory input and they feel like they have to stop the petting IMMEDIATELY.
Try giving her shorter petting sessions, quit before she reaches max capacity. You can try slowly, slowly increasing the time. Some can increase their tolerance, some can't.
I would advise against letting her swat your face. It's not a good habit to let her cultivate.
My husband has a cat who actually nips and pinches with his teeth if hubby stops petting before the cat is ready! Quite the odd duck.

She cannot get you to understand her superior language... you pathetic humans and your strange grunting communication... So how else is she supposed to let you know that you're DOING IT WRONG besides giving you a slap to put you in your place?
She is trying to teach you the correct way to do it... so when she gives you a smack, give a bit of thought to what you were doing PRECISELY that annoyed her... and stop doing it. She is only doing it because she is kind and benevolant... Some other cats wouldn't give you the time of day, and would just wander off... showing you the butt. THAT is something you don't want. You should consider yourself lucky that you got slapped.

You'll get it some day.

If I came up and just poked you under the arm pit lets say....would you like it?

She is letting you know she doesn't like something or if you have stopped petting too soon, she is letting you know...HEY...I'm not done getting attention yet here.

Average cat demands 15 mins of attention per day from their owners. Some demand it in one sitting, some 2 minutes at a time all day.

Cats just do that - I don't think there really is a problem. My cat bites if you pet him for too long, and he goes hyper sometimes, and runs madly up and down the living room knocking things over.

Hi there again...some cats will become overstimulated with the attention. It's nothing personal against you it's just they are unable to withstand too much and need to communicate this to you. It's not uncommonly seen so the best solution is to pet in short spurts to give your kitty small hints of attention so she doesn't feel compelled to swat you when she's had enough.

Stop petting her altogether for a few days and see if that doesn't give her an attitude adjustment. Sometimes they need to be ignored...I don't mean don't feed her or clean her litter box, please keep doing all that, but when she comes to you for attention, just don't give her any and see if that doesn't make kitty nice. Also, she could be trying to play, but I would still go for giving her the cold shoulder for a few days, and tell her why, not in a mean way, but look her in the eye and explain why her behavior is not acceptable to you and you won't have it. Keep me informed, I'd love to know how this comes out.

After awhile they don't want to be pet at all. Watch her ears if they go down she doesn't want you to touch her anymore.
