"A birthmark is a blemish on the skin formed before birth. They are part of the group of skin lesions known as naevi. The cause of birthmarks is unknown, but may include cellular damage due to radiation or chemicals."

You can remove them surgically.

If you do outgrow it, I would think that it would go away while your still a child. My sister was born with a red birthmark on her cheek. It was there for about two to three years and it just faded away. There is no sign of it now.

It's a skin blemish, you are usually born with them and you can remove them but they also make you look distinctive. I have a small one on the back of my neck that gets red when I'm angry, it's like I'm part incredible hulk!
