actually death is a requirement of life. If there was no death then there would only be enough oxygen available for about 8 minutes. then what? Life after death, quite a bizarre concept really. The idea if realizing and accepting death is real is to live your life with meaning. to make every bit of it count for all that you can. Your life can be very rich and sweet, and much more meaningful and profound if you realize that it is all there is, and live it with all the awe and respect that something so rare, precious and special deserves.

I guess if there is really no God, no plan, or afterlife then the self aware human species really is a blight on this otherwise paradise of a planet.
The works of Beethoven and flying to the moon are all well and good but I'm not sure they are good enough to justify our existence. And I think that is about all us hairless killer apes have.
Sorry, if we are not a part of a God's plan then I don't think we deserve to be here. We are a very cruel, messy, selfish and disruptive species and we are screwing up the planet for everyone else. Time for us to go. We were OK when there were just a few tribes scattered here and there, but this has gone way too far. Time for mother earth to develop some antibodies against us and get healthy again.

the complexity of our lives is just as mystifying as the simple reality. in the larger whole, no we are not very profound. in the universe we're microscopic, however in our daily lives, a single decision we make could make a huge impact on ourselves, on someone we know, on someone we don't know, or even impact thousands. even dying creates a ripple in the here and now. however getting back to the point, dying wouldn't be so bad if we were more like animals, however we aren't. we have lives, with heart and soul, and to die and not have anything to look forward to, to simply stop existing really is bad. memory doesn't hold out forever, and those who do remember us eventually die too and then our memory is lost except for a name and a date on a headstone marking the spot where our bodies lay rotting. not a pretty picture. no, i'd rather rise up and explore what was meant to be by God in heaven.

I guess then, as far as that goes, make the best of what you can with this life and be happy with it and yourself. * shrugs * You sound pretty fatalistic to me.
However... even if you didn't want it... I do have some info for you...
The Bible is clear when it describes the condition of the dead. It simply states: “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all . . . Their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished . . . There is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol [mankind’s common grave], the place to which you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10) True worshipers of God have long embraced this basic Bible truth. They have understood that the soul, rather than being immortal, can die and be destroyed. (Ezekiel 18:4)

I really can't say. I have thoughts of what happens or doesn't happen after death, but how can we really know. I like to believe that after we die we are born again, but I don't know if that's what will happen. I wouldn't mind it, I mean, I don't want to just have this life only. I want to experience more of life than just what I have right now. If we are assuming there is no afterlife, then what else can there be if there is no life after death but just void?

I know, I know, you said all religion aside, but it's too much a part of me, especially when it comes to death and the afterlife, where I know a glorious home awaits me in Heaven with the Lord Jesus!
Sorry, couldn't help myself.....

What is Death?
Is it the end, or the door to a new beginning?
Death is all around us. The death of a bird from the scattered feathers on a lawn, the dying breeze as the clouds move onwards. The Death of the sun as it sinks in the West and its re-birth each morning. Seeds planted to bring new Life, yet they come from the death of the flower or nut. Death is in the seasons, as each gives way to the next. When the snows of winter cover the land, Death is part of Life, as the old gives way to the new, and Spring heralds a new beginning.
Think about Death, not in a morbid way, but as a positive beginning that we must all face. Each has a purpose in Life, and each will have a purpose in Death. Live your Life to its fullest because your Ancestors made it possible. And when your time comes, know that it is not the end, but the beginning of a new existence.
We should not be afraid of Death, but welcome it and do our best to prepare ourselves, for our family’s sake.
Let grief be a cleansing, let none hide their tears, for it is their loss they are feeling, knowing that they are left without your smile, without your love. Let them know that you will meet again and give them courage to face their future, without you.
Death is but a doorway, and the key lies with the Goddess who turns it at her will.
You were born of me! You are my child and at death you shall return to me. Fear not of death, dear one, for within its realm I shall bring you new life! Just as the corn lives again, so shall it be with you! For all that falls shall rise again, and that which dies shall be blessed with the gift of rebirth, the gift of My love
Empty your mind of all thoughts.
Let your heart be at peace...
Each separate being in the universe
returns to the common source.
Returning to the source is serenity...
When you realize where you come from,
you naturally become tolerant, disinterested,
amused, kindhearted as a grandmother,
dignified as a king...
you can deal with whatever life brings you,
and when death comes, you are ready.
-Lao-tzu, The Book of The Way, 500 B.C.
There was a famous person sentenced to death that Plato wrote about. The person bore the thought that if death is the end..then I just go to sleep with no knowledge of my death just like i sleep now,but if there is an existence after death then I will just carry own existing the way I am now.I don't think that it is a bad thing. In western society we choose to ignore and not think about death but in eastern society they spend much of their lives thinking and preparing for death..Not as a end but to another plane of existance..Most of the Earths population believe that we are only here temporailiy and that this is only the begining.Recently I have found that Im have been a little obsessed with death and reading about it alot. From what I read I am starting to believe that its just the beginning. At least in the movies all the starring actors have famous quotes..Like in the Mummy...The mummy said.."Death is just the beginning" I have also read this in many ancient text..Also In Ghostbusters two where the ancient Soccerer came back to the painting in New York Museum says ..Death is but a doorway ,,time is but a window...Ill be back..! So if its on television in the movies it cant be too bad...A little humor there, but no..I think what most fear is not knowing the hour in which it comes for you or the way that you shall perrish but as for the actuall act of death ..No I don't think it will be anything other than what it is ..a passing from this world to another plane of existence.Carl Sagan believed that our minds were comprised of pure energy..a product of the human brain, but according to him you cannot destroy energy ,it only changes form.He was looking forward to exploring life after death..

The actaul death is not that bad, but the uncertainty of whats going to happen worries a lot of people. If nothing happen, do they just vanish, how would that be, and all sorts of questions come up.
