If you don't mind spending $400 a night the Renaissance Wailea beach resort is absolutely fabulous. We went to dinner at the restaurant there and the hotel itself and the views are something that you will never forget... You may even bump into some celebrities or sports players there.
If you're going to Hana, spend the night at the Hotel Hana Maui. It's another amazing place (around $400 a night) and you will never forget it.
Or if you're on a budget like we were, stay in a condo. You can find those for as low as around $95 a night.

four seasons hotel on the south side is a five star hotel w/the best accommodations and very professional staff. there are a lot of famous people who stay there because of their service and discreetion. grand wailea resort also in the same area is very nice, it has the 3rd best landscaping in the world. their pool is over an acre w/a lot of slides that are fun for the kids. those 2 are the most highly recommended on maui and are priced around 3 to 4 hundred dollars a night for a regular room. their suites could cost as much as $10,000/night. hope you enjoy your stay on maui, aloha!

Try a condo...they're a much better value. But, as far as hotels go it all depends on what you want. The Sheraton Maui is great, but the area is crowded. Embassy Suites up the road is OK too. Then, there's always resorts like the Four Seasons. All it takes is money.
