Yes, you can buy pencils of different hardnesses at any art supply store. The number on them refers to how hard the lead is. A regular #2 pencil is moderately soft. It's good for filling out those boxes on tests without smudgging a lot. The graphite in pencils is also graded by a number with the letters H or B. Example: A 4H is softer than a 6H. A 6H would be used for drafting architectural plans. It writes lightly and doesn't smudge. A 6B would be softer than a 4B. A 6B would be used for pencil sketches because the graphite is soft and smudges easily for shading.

There are different grades of pencil, often used by artists and draftspeople. There is often a letter infront of it and the higher the letter, the lighter line it will produce. Then there is a number range between those letters. You could try a H-1 pencil, but you will barely see an image.

The #2 pencil is very modest and didn't want to claim first place when other pencils are better for specific other uses. The #2 is best for writing that may need to be erased because it writes clean and dark but also erases relatively easily. This site is for #1 pencils:

At the art supply store you can find #1 to #6 pencils. Each lead is softer than the previous one and makes a darker line.

The numeral 1 is too hard to read. Soft pencils go from 2 to 6 as do hard pencils.

the number 2 represents the hardness of the lead (graphite). yes there are other grades -- check out your local drafting supply store.
the harder the lead, the finer lines you can draw. number 2 is a good choice for typical writing.
