I was just quoted $575, and a delivery of 8-9 months for a shoulder mount on a mule deer. Is this normal for California?

6 months to a year is normal. These things take time, they have to flesh the animal, and treat the hide (treating th hide takes 3 months of soaking) They have to order the forms (a large mule deer may cost $200.00 just for the form and then there is the cost of the eyes, wood backing, etc) Then he has to put it all together so it looks great and lasts for decades. Every time I get a mount done I think it's too expensive, but when you break down the work that's involved these guys really don't make a ton of money. If you send it to a cheap guy ($375.00) you get a cheap job and the mount looks like crap in 5 to 10 years, the more expensive guy ($600.00) the mount may look way better and last for 30 years. When you break down the cost over the years of enjoyment then you have to ask yourself if its worth it. I am having a full body bear mount done by a renouned taxidermist in Manitoba the cost ($2600.00)

$575 is average
it takes some time for the tanning process and the stretching of the hide over a mold
as the hide "cures" it stretches here and shrinks there
if the taxidermist were to complete the job prematurely it may look ok today but in time when it finishes its adjustment process it wont look so good
think about how long you are going to keep the mount and a few extra months dont mean much to wait for a quality trophy
while you are waiting go out and get another one !

Sounds like it could be right for California, probably more expensive on the west coast. Paid $300 for a shoulder mount on a whitetail in Northern New Hampshire and had to wait a year for it. Worth it though.

Depends if it is a well known taxidermist then yes it is worth the price if the person is doing it in his garage as a hobby I would not want to take my trophy to him it does take a while for them to compleate it $575.00 is not a bad price but shop around go to a local gun store see who they recomend.
