A classic Martini has just 2 ingredients: Gin and Dry Vermouth. The less Vermouth you put in, the "drier" the Martini. Green olives are a traditional garnish, and add a little extra flavor if you like them. Here's an example recipe:

A quality martini should taste very clean and dry, go down smooth, and have some light herbal flavors (from the gin) and a little bit of tang (from the olives and vermouth). The better the martini, the cleaner and smoother it should go down.
James Bond preferred Vodka Martinis, which use Vodka instead of Gin. But Gin is really just vodka infused with some herbal flavors, so I prefer the traditional. But here's the Bond martini:

These days, you can add all sorts of crazy flavors to this basic recipe and call it a "Martini". Add Peppermint Schnapps and you've got a "Christmas Martini". Add Blue Curacao and you have a "Blue Moon Martini". etc. There are hundreds of them:

Fun for parties, but I still prefer the classic with Bombay Sapphire Gin.

Take 21\2 shots of vodka or gin. Add a cpl. drops of olive juice {not everybody has vermouth} Shake and taste. A really rude version but cosmopolitans, chocolate, apple, raspberry martini's are easier to make {and most say are way yummier!}. Note:You should always shake cocktails containing the white liquors over ice before serving. It releases antioxiodants.

A good question, the only thing in a martini is gin or vodka and vermouth unless you try the new fancy shmancy ones. They are pure alcohol unless you count the olive, twist of lemon, or pearl onion. I enjoy them, some don't like the alcoholic bite.

It's unexplainable, like liver, lol. It doesn't have a taste that you can describe. It is however, quite potent and not many people are "sophisicated" enough to enjoy one, lol. I'd drink something else. Martinis are there to make people look classy, but they sure as hell don't when they've had ti many martoonis and are face down in the toilet! ;-P

It tastes like pure alcohol baby! Except cold. Unless you go for the fufu martinis, they have a lot of juices and sweeteners.

Martinis are bitter and dry. I tried one and had my boyfriend finish mine cos i can't stand the taste of any dry or bitter beverage (be it alcohol or cooldrink). It's probably just water with a bit of colouring in it.

I guess the best comparison I can make is perfume with a hint of citrus and olive. I make mine with two ounces hendrick's 1 ounce either dry or sweet vermouth (I prefer the classic dry) twist a little lemon over the glass and added an olive.

Bitter with a dry aftertaste. Yum! If you like olives, you will like martinis.

I heard it taste like gasoline. It may look all pretty, but it has a horrible taste. You can try the fruity kind, I heard they taste good.
