Useful items such as toiletries (sometimes not all of these items are allowed by the Navy and other armed forces unless government issue), writing paper, pens, playing cards, extra socks, paperback books, small computerized hand-held games, gum, some recent photos of the family and news of recent family gatherings, handkerchiefs, tins of cookies (gingersnaps and other hard cookies are the best, as they don't easily spoil), small packs of specialty coffee, hard candy, etc. However, you might want to check with the Department of the Navy to make sure all of these items are allowed.

I'm part of soldiers angels. They have a link there to tell you what the men and women really like having. Things such as shave cream but you can't send an aerosal can so you've gotta find the kind in a tube and snacks like gardettos and oreos and whatnot... drinks like gatoraid come in powdered mixes.
