Be aware Megapixel is only part of the picture in terms of picture quality. More megapixel doesn't necessary mean better picture quality. I will take a 6 megapixel DSLR with good lens over a 9 megapixel compact camera anytime.

Megapixel is the same idea as your computer screen resolution.The higher the number, the better resolution you can expect from your camera/cam/video etc.for more info just Google- Megapixel.You'll get a heap of info from there.

MP technically denote the approx. number of pixels that ends up per frame on your computer screen - the more the bigger/sharper/more information your pic will have. It's a good measurement for cameras.
In video it's better to go by the shooting standards (miniDV, DVD, MicroMV, High8, HD, et. al), because the MP usually denotes the quality of a separate camera function in consumer camcorders.
