You are probably getting poor gas mileage also. Chances are the thermostat isnt warming your engine enough for the temperature sensor to lean the mixture. This allows excess gas to wash oil off the cylinders and also enter the crankcase. This will reduce the life of the engine drastically. I have fixed so many cars with this problem for less than $10 when the mechanics said it needed several hundred in repairs. You can quote me on this.

The blackness of the oil is excessive carbon in the oil. My suggestion is to have the Oil Control system flushed to try and remove as much Carbon from the Oil Galleys as possible. Also, depends on what type of oil are you using. Is it cheap stuff or what Dodge recomends for that engine. If you only have 18,000 miles on the engine, the engine is covered under a 50,000 mile federal emissions warranty along with the standard manufactorer warranty. So, take it to the dealer and use the warranty that you have on the vehicle.

if your gas mileage is OK it could just be the oil, i found that Pennzoil will go coloured after only a few km and Quaker state stay clear until it's changed, do you change your filter at the same time ? also short trips are murder on oil, this may be contributing to the condition, commercial fleet operators use oil analysis company's , if you are concerned have one check yours.
