If not, I don't understand why muslims are not speaking out about this.

I'm a Muslim, I agree that men and women should dress modestly, but I don't agree with comparing women to meat and comparing men to cats! To me that is not right. And I don't think that in the case of rape the woman should be blamed, how can u blame the victim?!

In this day we know that rape is about power, not sex. I do not agree that because a women dresses provocatively she provokes being raped.

However, there is that old saying "if you advertise, sooner or later some one is gonna take you up on that offer". Which is more or less what I think he MAY have been trying to say. Let's face it, if a woman dresses in a mini skirt, heels, tons of makeup, and a shirt that shows plenty of cleavage, there are men out there that are going to be disrespectful towards them in one way or another, may it be by whistling, making comments, groping, etc.

Unfortunately, dressing modestly as a Muslim woman, does not always deter these pigs from doing the same to us either.

A woman is a human being that deserves respect, no matter how she chooses to dress.

I am a follower of Islam. And i know, it gives respect and rights of women then any other religion. Even, womans themself feel more secure then any other religion. Better ask to any Muslim women about it. But there are some hardliners who themself create rules and regulations which are not even mentioned in Islam.

Comment made by "Sheik Alhilali" is his personal openion. Islam teaches Men and Women both to dress modestly. Wearing indecent clouths is not allowed not only in Islam but also in other religions including Christainity. But we can not completely justify this for rapes. Because, Islam also teaches men to lower there gaze, if they see any women in am immodest manner.

But, i definately like to ask europeans, if they can object and ban veils which is modest then why there is so much screeming for just an openinon of a cleric. He is not ordering you to wear a scarf or veil. Now where is freedom of speech gone?

Hi! The reason that muslims are not saying anything about this is because it is not an issue. The mufti is correct. Any woman who claims to be muslim would humble herself and dress modestly as was prescribed by the Holy Qu'ran. If she decides to reveal herself openly then she is not guarding her chastity and is commiting haram or shirk, which basically means forbidden...

I am a muslim woman and I believe that a muslim woman should cover herself because she is God fearing.

The mufti needs to be asked why it is that even hijab-wearing women have become "meat" on the streets of Lakemba?...and perhaps asked by a delegation from the rape-victims Islamic support group. He seems to ascribe to the pre-Islamic pagan belief that women have no souls...they are the same as the beasts in the field. He gives lip service to the teaching of equality in the Qu'ran, but interprets it from a pagan viewpoint. A camel has rights too, within the framework of man's expectations. It is watered and fed, and given useful employment...carrying & pulling loads & breeding & even providing "meat" , milk & skin. Its owner may treat it cruelly or fairly; just as he pleases ...he may even come to have great affection for 1 or other camel. But it is still a Beast. It has no soul. It takes its existence from him.
So, too, is the woman/girl. She is part of some sort of Godly gift, made especially to provide for men...she has no spiritual existence outside of a man. A stray woman is like a stray camel...fair game for any thief.
One wonders why it is that the mufti so fears women? Is he so weak that he cannot lift his thoughts above waist-level?
I remember the decades of struggle by Islamic women to be rid of the all-enveloping veils. In Sidon, Tyre, even Jerusalem women had bleach and acid thrown in their faces...for daring to go out bare-faced. A major acheivment came when the women were allowed to take off their veils in bed...the strangulation & suffocation death-rate plummetted...but only after fools like the mufti fought bitterly against such "promiscuity".
It has now been proven that to cover oneself entirely and never to never let at least 20% (= arms & face) of one's skin feel the sun; depletes the body of vital vitamins and the person become infirm and unwell and even old decades before their time.
So what happened to all the Islamic/Qu'ranic "proofs" that were used to free women from the "oppresson" of the enforced veils?
Attacks of bleach and acid are on the increase in Jerusalem and in other places where extremists spit on their Prophet's words.
It is not a choice when it is enforced by fear.
Alhilali should cease being an arrogant hypocrite and cover himself from head to toe, and obey the Qu'ran where it tells him that men also should cover themselves. How is a weak woman supposed to restrain herself when he goes about (on National TV even) advertising himself as "meat" & "come and get me"?

i think properly covering is a protection to women but in my personal opinion i do not think you can ever blame her for a rape.... the same way you might not walk around in a bad neighborhood to protect yourself from robbery..... but if you have to or choose to walk in such an area and you are robbed i wouldnt say you were responsible for it...... you may have made it more likely but you certainly are not the robber

but also if you finished reading the article you would know that muslim leaders in australia are speaking out about it! this is the first i have heard of it in the us... i think muslims in the area are speaking out b/ they know about... many hear have not heard

***** this is just my opinion

ps i myself do cover

The way he put it may be a bit harsh though it may contain the truth.

An internet site with naked or half-naked women attracted more "cats" than one of modestly dressed women.

Peace-

Of course in the Muslim society everything is as it should be.
Men are in charge and everything negative will be swept under the carpet. Negativity is crime. As it was in Germany 1939 - 1945.

Its normal, if u go around showing most of ur body, the more likely guys will desire u...and if they can not control theirselves ...well things like rapping can happen.

And thing is, that this life style of us (so centered in consumism) encourages women to believe that their value as "women" takes being sexy and attractive all the time, and this kind of values reduces woman to be nothing but a piece of meat.

If u want people to respect u and treasure for being wise, kind or intelligent, well then try to drag people´s attention to all that virtues in u...but if all u have to offer is ur ass...well then go with flow...

meat that cats eat?

is he saying women smell like tuna?

i'd heard this before---like the joke where the blind man walks into a fish market and says "Hello Ladies", but i expected a little better from a leader of the 'religion of peace'.

this iman is a total loon!
