My dad is acquainted with a Danish man who wants to send his daughter to study at a university in the U.S. He is looking to find someone who would sponsor her to come, and asked my father to help find a sponsor. We might consider doing it ourselves but don't know too much about the process. What exactly is a sponsor supposed to do? What are the responsibilities? What are the risks? Which organizations provide information about this? and so forth.

(By the way, the girl has her own money and would live near the university which is about 50 miles from my home, so I'm not talking about a foreign-exchange student living in our home. I'm simply talking about sponsoring her as an immigrant.)

You cannot sponsor her as an immigrant. You would need to have a family relationship.

If she just wants to go to the US to study, she can do that on her own once she is accepted by a US university. She would not need a sponsor.

Sponsoring an immigrant means that the person will be responsible for the expenses and domicile of the foreigner. It is a guarantee that someone will finance the alien while in the US. Although the foreigner has money, the government wanted to make it sure that the alien's stay will not be a burden to the US.

Hvordan har det tet? First she needs to get accepted at the university. She needs to go to the U.S. embassy in Copehagen to show that she has the money and an acceptance from school. She will be issued an F-1 visa and off she goes.

I believe the Danish passport is good for about three months in the U.S.

get on the immigration website (www.uscis.gov) for some general info and find a reputable immigration lawyer if you are serious about it. don't listen to anyone who's not a professional in this business.
