Most victorian homes used darker colors, you didn't say what color the cabinets were or the counter tops. I have seen victorian kitchens painted in terra cotta colors with rich dark wood cabinets, believe it or not some of the darker colors really compliment small areas as long as you stay away from dark blues and greens. I would just get a bunch of paint swatches bring them home tape them on the wall and look at them for a few days and go from there. If the window is huge use lace curtains on it to let in more light, and figure out if your kitchen needs more lighting in certain areas. Try putting a few glass panels in the cabinet doors and display some pretty dishes and crystal in them, on the shelves around the ceiling place some nice crocks , pottery, baskets and some artifical greenery and some pretty plates and maybe a few of the old blue canning jars with the zinc lids. If this shelf is wide enough you can figure out how to put some back lighting around it which would really set it off. But we are a few steps beyond painting now!! Good luck with your paint selection.

Depends on color of your counters, the wood tone and the floor. Take your clues from there. Actually don't be afraid of color, just don't go wild. You can use a darker color but perhaps just one one wall and then ligher shade on the others. Ceiling should be light as possible. If the ceiling is too high, you can lower it by pulling the ceiling color down somewhat onto the walls....say down 12 inches or so....perhaps encompassing the nick nack shelf? Go to www.behr.com and play around with their color program.....it's fun.

I just painted mine a light rich yellow. I use red and gold accents and it's very warm and homey. The granite counter is brown and gold so it compliments nicely. I painted the adjoining room a darker shade of the same color. I sampled other colors before deciding. You can too:

My whole life I avoided white for kitchens and bathrooms... White is for hospitals... brrrr...
My bathroom is olive... and my kitchen is painted in... peach. A warm and light colour. It goes very well with my furniture (cherry) and my numerous plants. You can try this combination. Don't forget to add some plants - since you have a large window, they will do just fine - and make the room more "vivid"

You should keep the color light so that it still has that open feel to it. Yellow would be a good color and there are sooo many shades to choose from.
