That depends on your lifestyle, how much time you have to spend with your dog, you yard size (if any) how much time & moeny you are willing to spend on grooming........

Check out AKC.org for some very good information. Narrow it down to several breeds and then find that breed's website and maybe a Yahoo group on that breed and ask lots of questions. Good research is vital in picking a forever pet to keep them from being discarded.

It depends on what kind of person you are, your family circumstances and where you live.
If you are fairly young and energetic, love walking already, have time to walk twice a day, and live in the countryside or have a large garden and live near an area of parkland or beach which is dog friendly - get a large dog - if none of these apply, then don't.
If you are at all contemplating starting a family or in a relationship where it might happen - please don't get a dog, because at first the dog will be your sole focus, but when the baby arrives, the dog will have to take a back seat, you'll be knackered most of the time and won't feel like exercising and playing with an animal, and it's unfair on the dog; also well - documented problems of jealousy and necessity of dog + child vigilance.
If you work and the house is empty all day, please don't get a dog. They are pack animals and deeply unhappy when left alone.
If you live in a built up area stick with a small breed that is not aggressive to children, otherwise you're in for a lot of grief. That doesn't mean you have to get a lapdog- a female Jack Russell is a good lively, friendly little dog and a great watchdog/ companion. The male tends to bite and not so safe near children. That's my experience, but do get a female seen to by the vet, or you're just into a whole new set of problems. A dog is a lot of fun, but a whole lot of hard work and responsibility comes with it.

A labradoor makes a lovely pet, particulalry if you have children as they are very loyal and friendly dogs. I have had a Pekinese who was absolutley adorable but it was battle of wills if you weanted him to do anything. A shih Zhu makes a nice small pet dog. With any pet, though, you need to put a lot of time and work in to make him/her feel comfortable and happy around you. Like humans, dogs have different personalities so it is best to spend some time with them before you choose. Lastly, please remember, a dog is for life (which may be 15 years or more) and not just for your entertainment until you get bored.

The best type of dog all depends on your circumstances, do you work long hours, are yu an active person, do you have children, before you choose a breed you need to establish your personal life and commitments then choose a breed to suit, if your an active person with children then a Doberman may be an good idea ( and no they are not violent dogs if trained properly as i have a doberman and children ) if you more relaxed and work long hours then you may need to get a smaller dog or dog to suit those needs, Hope this helps, Damo

Are you a farmer or rancher? Then you would want a work dog like a shepherd or collie. If youre a hunter you would want a sporting dog like a springer or labrador RETRIEVER. But if youre like 90% of people looking for a dog you want an indoor companion lap dog which would be small and affectionate and loyal. Many small dogs fit that. Many terriers though are ratting type, tunneling dogs that are extrememly hyper which can be tiring after awhile. Maltese, Bichon, Shitzus, and small poodle mixes are all very good indoor companion dogs. Good luck.

There is no best dog in general. It depends on your situation. A greyhound dog is a baby. I needs a lot of love, attention and needs to be with its human owner constantly. They are also great with kids.
A small dog like a Pomeranian is not aware its a small dog and has a tendency to be very protective of its owner. they will actually go after a larger dog.

Its best to talk to either a vet or someone with extensive dog knowledge to find the perfect companion for you.
Good luck

I thing it depends greatly on your experience with dogs.

I have a 1 year old Japanese Akita and I love her to bits! She is an amazing dog, great with children, other dogs and she is really chilled out and looks absolutely gorgeous- however saying this she has had her moments with chewing etc but they are very intelligent dogs and can be trained very easily, they give so much back thus if you have the time to train and experience with dogs- highly recommend a Japanese Akita as they are great dogs

The old dog in the rescue home, that will be put down if a new home isnt found for it

I used to work in a cat n dog home, I hated it when I had to give the drugged food to a dog just before it was taken away to be put down! One of them was such a great dog, his owner had died, but noone wanted him as he was too old, after the medication he tried to stand u to come n see me and fell over n started to whine, I stayed with him till they took him away! I wanted to take him home but I was only 18 and living with my parents, we already had various pets and my mum said no more!

So go for that one dog that noone else wants! They make great pets!

Ive rescued a number of dogs n cats over the years and love it!

WHOA not a german shepard unless it's had realy good training esspecialy if u have small kids because they have violent tendancies.

if you want a dog that will be like a lap-dog, aaand if you dont have small kids then a shitzu or maltese would be ideal. They are good companion dogs that will just sit on your lap and go everywhere with you!

if you want a big dog to play with at the park and swim in the lake that kind of thing, Golden retrievers are great same with all kinds of labradores. Or if you want a smaller dog cocker spannielles are good to. These dogs are great with kids and will love everyone who's anyone... Just keep in mind, for these dogs, if they are male, you should get them neutered or they will stay hyper and may have obedience issues.

if you want a one on one companion Great danes are awsome! they are protective and obedient and just overall smart dogs!
